African Swine Fever vaccine development

Project Leaders: Suresh Tikoo, Volker Gerdts

African Swine Fever is a devastating disease of pigs, which leads to haemorrhagic fever and death of infected animals. The disease is endemic in many parts of Africa and represents a major threat to the North American and European Swine Industry. The disease is caused by infection with a large arthropod-borne DNA virus. Vaccines are currently not available. In collaboration with researchers at the University of Alberta, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the South African Research Council, we are evaluating a novel proprietary adenoviral vector vaccine for this important disease.

  • Identify novel protective antigens
  • Use a porcine adenoviral vector platform developed by Dr. Tikoo’s lab for delivery of the vaccine antigens
