Histophilosis

Project Team: Jose Perez-Casal, Mohamed Helmy, Tracy Prysliak, and Sylvia Li.

Collaborators: Dr. Joyce Van Donkersgoed (Dr. Joyce Van Donkersgoed Inc.)

Histophilosis is the largest cause of mortality in fall-placed calves in feedlots in Western Canada. Histophilus somni causes septicemia, which can result in multiple manifestations of the disease including myocarditis, pericarditis, pleuritic, bronchopneumonia, arthritis and infectious thromboneningoencephalitis (ITME). This disease is hard to diagnose in a live animal.

This project focuses on developing a recombinant subunit vaccine for control of the respiratory and systemic forms of histophilosis in Canadian feedlots. This vaccine is based on known H. somni subunit antigens that in small trials have shown protection against experimental challenges.
