Veterinary Services
VIDO has a highly trained team of four veterinarians and 10 animal care technicians, and the accompanying infrastructure, to safely and humanely study infectious diseases using animal models. Our Clinical Research group supports the evaluation of vaccines and other anti-infective compounds by managing all aspects of animal handling and care. This includes involvement in study design, animal model development, conducting vaccinations and samplings, and completing surgical procedures.
VIDO specializes in the development of large animal models, but has the capability to work with all species. Our team regularly works with cattle, swine, sheep, poultry, rabbits, ferrets, mice, hamsters, cotton rats, alpacas, bison and cervids.
Accreditation:
As an organization originally established to protect livestock from infectious diseases, VIDO takes great care to ensure the ethical and humane treatment of animals. Our veterinarians are licensed by the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association; 5 of our animal care technicians hold Registered Veterinary Technologists diplomas, and the remainder hold degrees in Animal Science.
All research with animals is completed in accordance with the requirements of the University Animal Care Committee (UACC) and the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). VIDO has a CCAC Certificate of GAP – Good Animal Practice®.
