Dr. White joined VIDO as a Research Scientist in 2009. He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry at University of Victoria in 2000. Prior to joining the VIDO team, Dr. White completed his post-doctoral research in the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Calgary, and with the Alberta Provincial Health Lab. He holds the Jarislowsky Chair in Biotechnology and has expertise in the areas of bacterial pathogenesis, biofilm formation, molecular biology, and next generation DNA sequencing.
Research Interests:
- Biofilm formation, transmission and virulence for Salmonella, E. coli and other enteric pathogens
- Vaccine development (E. coli infections in chickens; Salmonella infections in people)
- Microbial colonization in human catheters
- Interactions between microbes
- Antibiotic resistance / biofilm formation
- Treatment with non-antibiotic antimicrobials
- Connection between intestinal infections / colonization and human neurodegenerative diseases
Current Project:
- Salmonella biofilms/virulence
- E.coli virulence in chickens and vaccine development
- Human catheters – biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance
- Curli / prions / human neurodegenerative disease
