Shannon McCreary
Clinical Research Veterinarian
Dr. Shannon McCreary's interest in zoonotic diseases was sparked early in life by a trace-out investigation for Scrapie in her family's sheep flock. She studied animal science at the University of Saskatchewan prior to earning her DVM from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. During her time as a student Shannon worked with several livestock research labs exploring porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, and bovine gut barrier function. Dr. McCreary worked in a busy mixed clinical practice in rural Saskatchewan until her passion for infectious disease led her to join the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. She spent five years in the public service working in the sectors of livestock import/export, meat hygiene, and regulated disease management—with extensive experience in Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.
She is passionate about the importance of high-containment research and open information sharing for global health. Dr. McCreary's greatest professional interest is health at the human-animal interface and she is excited to contribute to the zoonotic pandemic preparedness work being done at VIDO.
